This book shows 2 little bunnies wanting to buy a gift, but they end up spending money on various other things. A good lesson for discussing wants vs. needs and how to plan purchases.

Ages 4 – 8
This book offers an interesting look at the history of money.
If You Made a Million by David Schwartz
Ages 4 – 8
This book discusses earning money, investing it, watching it grow, and counting interest too! The pictures are neat and the story is fun!
Lemonade in Winter by Emily Jenkins
Ages 3 – 7
This cute story is about 2 little kids who start a lemonade stand business in winter! It’s cute and fun with a little repeating “marketing” rhyme. It discusses setting up a business, counting and sorting money, and looking at profits. The end page shows the different coins and discusses amounts.
A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams
Ages 4 – 8
This very sweet book shows a family who saves their coins to buy a comfortable chair after a fire destroys their possessions.
Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts
Ages 5 – 8
This book touches on subjects like fads, wants vs. needs, and being content with the good things we do have.
It’s Not Fair!: A Book About Having Enough by Caryn Rivadeneira
Ages 4 – 7
A girl saves money to buy something, and on the way to the store she meets friends who need help. This book teaches about money concepts, making choices with money, and generosity.
Alexander, Who Used To Be Rich Last Sunday by Judith Viorst
Ages 4 – 8
Alexander’s grandfather gives him some money – what will he do with it? A good lesson about saving vs spending.
The Penny Pot by Stuart J. Murphy
Ages 7 – 9
The Penny Pot includes opportunities to count sets of different coins and discusses saving money for something you want.
A Bike Like Sergio’s by Maribeth Boelts
Ages 5 – 8
A little boy finds money on the sidewalk and he really wants a bike, but what about the lady who lost the money? A good lesson on money, morals, and ethical choices.

Get a Financial Life by Beth Kobliner
Although this book is meant for young adults in their 20s and 30s, I personally think you can’t start too young when helping your kids get on a secure financial path. Make sure your teenagers understand the basics in this book before they leave home!

Beth Kobliner emphasizes that teaching your kids good money habits isn’t about understanding the names and values of coins, but rather learning (and living!) basics values like: delaying gratification and spending less than you earn.
The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins
This is my favorite book and helped me get my financial life together! JL Collins lays out a very “simple path to wealth” that he follows and that he set up his daughter to follow (when in her early 20s). This book is easy to understand and he has 3 very basic money rules to follow.
Smart Money Smart Kids by Dave Ramsey and Rachel Cruze
This book has great concrete examples for helping your kids understand money by giving them the chance to use it! Rachel gives a personal money example that all kids would benefit from learning while still at home!
The Bogelheads’ Guide to Investing by Taylor Larimore
This is a complete, in-depth guide to investing, covering a wide range of topics. I found it a little bit dry, but the information is great and good to know.
