There is a great version for younger kids, Catan Jr., for ages 6+ that my daughter loves to play. There are also lots of different kinds of fun expansion packs to add to your base for expanding play (like Seafarers or Traders and Barbarians).
You can also incorporate a mini-history lesson about what people did before money and how money acts in the place of bartering today.
